Title: Literary Elements in Jane Eyre

1
Literary Elements in Jane Eyre
  • Shannon Jackson

2
Symbolism
  • A device in literature where an object represents
    an idea
  • The red-room in Jane Eyre represents death, hell,
    emotional imprisonment, and isolation. The
passage in Ch. 2 explains that the room is very
seldom slept in, showing isolation and its
devoid of life (perfect for Janes situation).

3
Synecdoche
  • A figure of speech wherein a part of something
    represents the whole thing.
  • An example of a synecdoche in Jane Eyre is when
Jane describes her tears as drops of salt,
instead of a whole as tears.

4
Plot
  • The structure of a story. The sequence in which
the author arranges events in a story. The
structure of a five-act play often includes the
rising action, the climax, the falling action,
and the resolution. The plot may have a
protagonist who is opposed by antagonist,
creating what is called, conflict. A plot may
include flashback or it may include a subplot
which is a mirror image of the main plot
  • The plot of Jane Eyre is that she is a young
orphan who lives and is taken care of by her
aunt. She gets locked in the red-room for being
beaten, and requests to be sent away to school.
It is far from what she expected, but she meets a
friend named Helen. Helen dies soon after, and a
new headmaster arrives. Jane teaches, and is soon
to be married until drama arrives. In the end,
Jane lives happily ever after with her husband
    and son.
