Alaska Contractor HSE Forum March 18, 2008

What is Goal Zero?
  • It is an aspiration rather than a target
  • Recognises that safety is a core value, like
    honesty and integrity
  • It is acceptance that all harm is avoidable
  • It is convincing everyone that an incident free
workplace is an achievable goal each day, every
    day
  • It is moving from rationalising harm to being
determined to take urgent action to prevent it
  • It is about what we do - not what we say
  • It is about living the Golden Rules

3
Do you believe?
  • All accidents are preventable
  • Accidents arise when barriers fail and barrier
failure is almost always related to behaviours
    (compliance and intervention)
  • By changing our behaviour we can prevent accidents

Why is difficult to Comply, Intervene and live
the Golden Rules ?
4
How to start the journey to Goal Zero?
  • Recognise that it will be a long journey
  • Be willing to think and act differently
  • Stop being comfortable with incremental
    improvement
  • Urgency
  • Prioritize Our Actions

5
Goal Zero is Possible
  • DuPont (4 of last 10 years Zero Fatalities)
  • ChevronTexaco (2005 Zero Fatalities)

I want to work for the safest company in the
industry. The target of zero is possible. Some of
our competitors are able to achieve zero this
means every father, son, wife mother that works
for them goes home to their families each day
(Jeroen van de Veer - Shell)
