Title: PIIS start up Expectations on Branch Online Environment User Awareness
1PIIS start upExpectations on Branch Online
EnvironmentUser Awareness
- Presentation By Peerless Computer Center
- 12th November, 2002
2Foremost Commitment
- Please do not experiment with the
- system or devices
- IN Online mode this might spoil your
- work and also others connected with
- You
- Ensure correct input to expect a correct output
- Data correction after End Of Day session is not
permitted by PIIS as this data gets replicated in
the Central Server

4What are my Systems Resources ?
- Branch Server (high end PCs)
- runs on LINUX operating system loaded with
J2SE software - Branch Nodes (PCs) runs on LINUX J2SE software,
connected to the Server over LAN - Routers Modems for Wide Area connectivity over
ISDN or Leased Line - VSAT outdoor indoor units for satellite
connectivity - Oracle 9i Database
- PIIS Application Software
5How should I care my resources?
DOs AND DON'Ts
- Switch off monitor when not in use
- Share your password with anybody
- use unauthenticated floppies which may contain
virus
- Before switching on your computer check whether
all the devices are connected - Keep Server, Nodes, Router, VSAT Indoor Unit etc
in A/C Dust free room - Install VSAT outdoor unit on rooftop
6How should I care my resources?
Continued
DOs AND DON'Ts
- Before switching off the computer, do a complete
shutdown - Ensure printer is connected and paper fed before
taking printouts
- Taking printouts of graphics and designs and
waste ink - Download / install software without authorisation
from administrator
7How should I care my resources?
Continued
DOs AND DON'Ts
- Branch Administrators do Startup and Shutdown
procedures daily - Ensure correctness of data at entry level
- Do End-of-day Processing
- Ensure UPS support to protect abrupt power
failure
- Branch Administrators
- do not change passwords
- Branch Administrators Allow End-of-day
Processing without clearing backlog - Let out passwords
- Run the System even if UPS is down
8How should I care my resources?
Continued
DOs AND DON'Ts
- Delink WAN after successful SOD EOD
- Keep an eye on Maintenance of the devices
engage Company approved agencies
- Keep the link up even when connectivity is not
required pay a huge telephone bill - Assume Machines will work fine every hour
service by any one will do
9How I am connected with Data Center ?
- Your Branch is connected to the Data Center by
ISDN/ Leased Line/ VSAT - Service Center(SC) is connected to the parent
Branch by ISDN through out the customer service - Generally the Branch will connect Data Center
twice a day - At the Start Of Day (SOD)- to check downloads
- At the End Of Day (EOD) to upload data
- Delink after SOD relink for EOD
-
10How should I register my service call ?
- For all H/W S/W services register your call
with RCC by fax, telephone or mail (future) - RCCs will issue a docket no. for every call
- For all Network services, register your call with
N/W nearest help desk - You may escalate the call to PCC after a
reasonable wait - RCCs may escalate the call to PCC if it is beyond
their capacity - All RCCs will submit a call status report every
Monday to PCC. Report format will be supplied by
PCC - PCC RCCs will ensure that no call is open
beyond three days
11How do I get training to operate PIIS ?
- On hand operation training will be given by
- PCC/ RCC team before PIIS implementation at
your Branch - Network equipment handling training will be
provided by the Network Service provider - User Manuals will be provided to every Branch
- Self learning assisted by peer
- Play role model in training your own team
- Suggestions on User Manual are welcome
12 AWARNESS ABOUT NETWORK
13Why What is a Network ?
- Introduction
- Network Fundamentals
- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
- Operating Networks
14What is a Network
- A Network is the framework that enables two
or more computers to communicate with each other
and/or other devices. -
15Why do we need a Network ?
- Share Processing Power
- Share Information
16Network Components
- Hardware Components
- Transmission Facilities Physical media (Cable,
Radio etc.) - Access Devices Network Interface Card (NIC)
- Forwarders Such as Hub, Bridge, Switch, Router
etc.
17 LOCAL AREA NETWORK
18LAN-Attached Devices
- Servers Multi-user computers
- File Servers
- Print Servers
- Application Servers
- Database Servers
- Clients Any computer that accesses resources
stored on servers, via the LAN - Printers
19Transmission Media
- Tangible transmission media
- Coaxial cable
- Twisted pair wire
- Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP Cat-3 and Cat-5)
- Fiber-optic cable
- Multimode
- Single mode
20Networking Hardware
- Network Interface Cards (NIC)
- Repeaters
- Hubs
- Bridges
- Routers
- Switches
- Gateways
21Wide Area Networks
- WANs enable LANs at various geographic distance
to be networked together. - The WANs technology base includes the following
- Transmission Facilities
- Communication Hardware.
- Inter-network Addressing
- Routing Protocols
22Transmission Facilities
- Leased Lines
- Circuit-Switched Facilities
- Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN)
- Switched 56 (Dial-on demand 56 Kbps)
- Leased Line Modems
- Routers
23Leased Lines
- A Leased Line is a permanent telephone connection
between two points set up by a telecommunications
common carrier. - Leased Lines are used by businesses to connect
geographically distant offices. - Unlike normal dial-up connections, a leased line
is always active and can assure a given level of
quality.
24ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
- It is an international communications standard
for sending voice, video, and data over digital
telephone lines. There are two types of ISDN
available BRI and PRI. - BRI (Basic-Rate Interface) consists of two
B-channels that can carry voice or data at rate
of 64 Kbps, and one D-channel, which carries
call-control information. BRI is designed for
individuals and small businesses. - PRI (Primary-Rate Interface) consists of 23
B-channels (30 in Europe) and one D-channel. PRI
service is generally transmitted through a T-1
line (or an E1 line in Europe).
25 What is a Modem ? The device used to connect
the computer to a tele line is called ModemThe
device MODulates DEModulates signals from
Analog to Digital vise versa
26Satellite Communication Device
- VSAT
- ( Very Small Aperture Tube )
- We have selected ku broad band
- 1.2 meter diameter antenna
- SKY Blaster model
- VSAT has two units
- 1. Out door unit consisting of Antenna
- positioned south east open facing
- 2. Indoor unit bundled with modem
- Hub Center to control VSAT Network
