Gas Pressure System
To provide 6 bar helium gas for actuating the
cryogenic valves and current lead disconnect.
6
Gas delivery
Usable gas in bottle is 207 grams min. Top
up/Filling to be carried out before launch. Gas
purity to be 99.9999. A disconnect or cryovalve
operation uses approximately the same quantity of
gas. Sufficient gas planned for 82 operations.
7
Composite over-wrapped pressure vessel
Arde gas bottle 8.3 litre volume. Filled with
200 bar helium (temp excursions can raise this to
273 bar) Total number of actuations (at 6 bar) 82
300 bar burst disc protects the
vessel Qualification burst (prior experience 938
bar)

Gas Regulation
Marotta proposal is based around existing flight
hardware.
Fill Drain Valve Operated by dedicated ground
half coupling. 2 metal seals and an o-ring seal
in series. Leakage 1x10-6 mbar-l/s.
Regulator RV29 Extensive aerospace heritage.
Similar Marotta regulator currently in use on the
space station. 6 bar lockup downstream. 15 bar
min upstream pressure. Leakage 1x10-4 mbar-l/s
Relief valve Based on series in aerospace
use. Full Flow _at_ 8 bar. Re-seat _at_ 6.5
bar. Leakage 1x10-4 mbar-l/s.
9
Manifolded Assembly
Preliminary manifold design. Mass 2.72 kg

11
MOOG latching Valve
Flow Diameter 3.175mm Mass lt 140 grams
each Voltage 24 V Type latching Power 11 watts
(50 msecs _at_ 24 volts) Leakage across seat lt
1x10-4 mbar-l/s
12
Hoerbiger Piezo Electric Latching Valve
Mass lt 80 grams per valve. 13 valves in
total. Voltage 24 V. Power 6 mW (while
latching). Operation latching 3 way
valve. Tested using cryovalve test rig.
13
Gas System Outstanding Questions
Determine location of all components around
AMS. Route pipework. Integration of vacuum case
with USS Mechanical fixing of all items. Place
orders with component manufacturers.

  • Bursting Discs - Fike

The same manufacturer that has produced cold
bursting discs is being used. Pre-qualification
cold discs have gone through testing programme
successfully.
BD14, BD15, BD16 BD17 are being developed by
Fike at the moment. The nine other bursting disc
designs are completed and awaiting order.

Weka warm valves
Weka have produced cryogenic valves for AMS. Warm
valves still under development. 16 valves
required for flight system. SCL awaiting
dimensions and performance spec.

Space Cryomagnetics. Lightest valve type for this
application
26
External Valves - Outstanding Work
  • Details of the WEKA valves.
  • Definition of all pipework and mechanical
    support.
  • Vibration and pressure testing of VAT, Swagelok
    and WEKA valves.
  • Definition of all required qual testing.

27
Conclusions
  • All gas system and external valves identified.
  • Work ongoing to determine physical location and
    fixing method for all components.
  • Details of WEKA valve required before pipework
and fixings design can be completed.
