Prevention
  • An effort to avoid something undesirable

Successful PreventionModel
  • Address social ailments that may lead to
    disastrous consequences
  • Address ailments that threaten society,
    preferably before their onset.
  • Be able to treat large populations
  • Identify characteristics that place certain
    groups at risk.

Levels of Prevention
  • Primary Prevention- Seeks to protect by keeping
    the large unaffected population free from he
    disorder. (immunizations)
  • Secondary Prevention- Efforts to identify and
    intervene with infected populations at the
    earliest stage possible.
  • Tertiary Prevention- Prevents the growth of the
    disorder, Reduce effect, Rehabilitate.

Remediation vs. Prevention
  • Until recently, remediation was given priority
    over prevention.
  • a. New jails were built
  • b. More substance abuse treatment centers
  • c. More rape crisis centers, Battered
    womens shelters.
  • Public opposition to many prevention programs(sex
    ed. In high schools,etc)

Primary Prevention is Critical
  • Treatment alone can never eliminate society's
    problems.
  • Financial cost for remediation is much higher
    than prevention.
  • Along with financial cost is personal suffering.

Planning for Prevention
  • Program must begin before the symptoms
  • Must be aimed at populations, not individuals.
  • Program must recognize and assess the forces at
    work in the targeted population
  • Research to find proven procedures that have
    worked in the past.
  • Must have organizational support

  • Parents- Primary influence on childs development
  • Environment- Can either inhibit or influence the
    development on undesirable behaviors.
  • Quality of life issues
  • a. privacy, density/space, safety,
    appearance

  • Mostly Primary

  • Self esteem
  • Parental involvement
  • Support groups
  • Life skills instruction with focus on the future

  • Has gained popularity over the past several
    years.
  • Counselors should understand the psychological
    impact of illness and accidents.
  • Research has found a link between Nutrition and
    behavior.

  • Burnout- A psychological condition associated
    with stress and adjustment needs.
  • Prevents an individual from coping with the
    demands of everyday living

Common factors Causing Burnout
  • Too many demanding situations
  • Constant pressure to do more
  • Constant conflicts interruptions
  • Lack of positive feedback rewards
  • Lack of clarity of instructions
  • Poor interpersonal relationships
  • All work and no play.

  • Identify the stressor, talk about it
  • Build a support system
  • Practice time management
  • Develop leisure time activity(Leave work at work)

  • Shape up both physically and mentally.

Conclusion
  • As Counselors we need to assist our clients in
    improving their way of life in such a way that
    advances them towards his or her human
    fulfillment.
