Who was she?
Fanny Blankers-Koen was born on the 26th of
April 1918. Her real name was Francina Elsje
Koen. As a child she already was a fanatic
sporter. She found it very difficult in which
sport she wanted to specialize. She swam,played
tennis,practiced athletics,gymnastics and
skating. Her professional career started in
1935. In 1940 she married Jan Blankers,
sportsjournalist en coach of the national team of
female athletics. In 1999 she became athlete of
the century. Fanny ended her sportcareer in 1952
at the age of 38. On the 25th of January she died
at the age of 85.

What made her so special ?
In 1981, her name became connected with a
sportevent, the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games.
These international athleticgames are finding
place every year in Hengelo. When womensports
were not so wellknown,Fanny was a great example
for many women. During her sportcareer she won
58 national titels and set 21 worldrecords. Fanny
Blankers-Koen, nicknamed the flying housewife",
is one of the first female Dutch sportslegends
Fanny Blankers-Koen is one of the greatest
