Roots and Root Words
  • A root is the main part of a word. It may or may
    not be able to stand alone.
  • A root word is the main part of a bigger word
    that can stand alone.
  • It would not be a word without its roots, just
    like a plant would not be a plant without its
    roots.

  • care is a root word that can stand alone. In the
    word careless, care is the root.
  • stract is a root that can not stand alone. In
    the word distract, stract is the root. But
    stract is not a word by itself.

  • A prefix is a word part that is added to the
    beginning of a root word.
  • It is the start of the word, like the start of a
    race.

  • A suffix is a word part added to the end of a
    root word.
  • It is the end of the word, like the finish of a
    race.
