Roots and Root Words

• A root is the main part of a word. It may or may
  not be able to stand alone.
• A root word is the main part of a bigger word
  that can stand alone.
• It would not be a word without its roots, just
  like a plant would not be a plant without its
  roots.

Some examples of roots and root words

• care is a root word that can stand alone. In the
  word careless, care is the root.
• stract is a root that can not stand alone. In
  the word distract, stract is the root. But
  stract is not a word by itself.

Prefix

• A prefix is a word part that is added to the
  beginning of a root word.
• It is the start of the word, like the start of a
  race.

• pre before
• pretest (the test you take before you learn the
  skill)
• postafter
• Posttest(the test you take after you learn the
  skill)
• reagain
• Retest (to take the test again)
• in,im,un in, into or not
• insane (not sane, crazy)

Suffix

• A suffix is a word part added to the end of a
  root word.
• It is the end of the word, like the finish of a
  race.
