Origins of the ATC 1
  • Air Commodore J Chamier regarded as the father of
    the Air Cadet movement
  • Wanted to set up an organisation to train young
    men who were interested in aviation
  • In 1938 formed the Air Defence Cadet Corps
  • First 50 squadrons called Founder Squadrons and
    had an F after their squadron number

  • Aimed to provide as much service and aviation
    background as possible
  • Drill, discipline, uniform, sports, flying,
    camping, shooting
  • The cadets helped out with clerical work during
    the early years of the war
  • The government realised the good work they did
    and set up Air Training Corps
  • 5th Feb 1941

Developments in the ATC
  • Uptake into the new ATC was popular
  • Same activities as the ADCC, but with more of an
    academic and PT focus
  • Due to high demand for flying, gliding was
    introduced as an alternative
  • Cadets got dedicated aircraft in 1943
  • Oxfords, Dominies
  • In 1945 became part of the RAF Reserve

The Aims of the ATC
  • Three new aims of ATC formed in 1947
  • Promote and encourage a practical interest in
    aviation and the services
  • To provide training useful for both military and
    civil life
  • To foster the spirit of adventure

Developments in the ATC - Flying
  • In 1948 two seater gliders were introduced so
    cadets could fly and be taught at the same time
  • The Viking glider introduced in 1984 and the
    Vigilant glider introduced in 1989
  • In 1957 13 Air Experience Flights were set up
    with a fleet of 50 Chipmunks
  • The Bulldog was used for AEF in 1996
  • The Grob Tutor used for AEF since 1999

  • Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme became open to all
    squadrons from 1960
  • In 1967 changes made to training to move it away
    from academic and more to project and adventure
  • In 1980 girls allowed to join the Corps
