3Personal and Professional Development
- Both are fundamental to overall wellbeing and
life satisfaction.
4One-Sided Systems Approach
- Most organizations have historically taken a one
sided approach to work-life balance - Focusing primarily on benefits, organizational
policies, and procedures to help solve the
work-life balance issue - This leaves out the individual employees
responsibility for his/her own personal issues
5What can the Individual do for him/herself to
enhance personal work-life balance?
- Empowerment
- Personal Responsibility
- Strategy
6Two Legs of Work-Life Strategy
- Left Leg Organizations Responsibility
- Addresses key opportunities an employer has to
provide resources for employees and their
families - Quick Hit Opportunities
- Right Leg Individuals
Responsibility - Essential because it varies for everyone
- Unique to the individuals needs
- Changes over time and stages of life
- Created by the individual
7The Corporate Ladder
- Climbing the corporate ladder is harder when
you dont have both legs on the ladder - With a one-sided strategy, one will not
effectively achieve a balance between work and
home - Support is needed by having both legs
8It takes two legs for a ladder to stand. You
cannot climb a ladder that is not standing.
- Consider what your ladder looks like is it
standing or is it needing an additional leg?
9Quick Hit Opportunities

as a work-life package - Promote EAP services
- Offer Lunch and Learns
- Do away with Friday afternoon meetings
- Endorse working from home
- Have a bring your kids to work day
- Offer wellness opportunities offer subsidies for
off-site exercise - Support employees outside interests
- Get to know your employees
10What does your company do to encourage personal
and professional development?
- This will help quantify how much support you are
giving your employees via the Left Leg.
11Marriage and Family conflicts are the primary
reasons that people seek counseling.
- If personal problems are not resolved, work
performance is impacted.
12If employers will continue to be more mindful of
work-life balance, employees will find a healthy
balance between work and home.
- Learning work-life skills should be a part of
your organizations stated strategy.
13EAP Services
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are vitally
important in the execution of work-life services
and teaching these concepts to employees. - Training is available to coach employees on a
variety of topics for the workplace as well as
home. - Consult with your EAP vendor and enhance these
efforts in your HR team
