• Glass-Steagall Act- Created FDIC insurance
• Securities and Exchange Commission- Regulation of
  Stock Exchange to ensure stability.

More Legislation

• Tennessee Valley Authority- Built dams on rivers
  created jobs, a new power source, and protected
  from floods.

Work Relief

• Public Works Admin. Built roads, gov.
  buildings, and public projects.
• Works Progress Admin. Put writers and artists
  to work

Attack on Frankie

• Sen. Huey Long Favored a re-distribution of
  wealth
• Father Charles E. Coughlin openly criticized FDR
  on his radio show
• Francis Townshend Called for Social Security
  for the elderly

Moving Forward

• Social Security Act- set up SS and public
  assistance.
• Wagner Act- Guaranteed workers the right to join
  unions.

Supreme Court Issues

• FDR tried to amend the Supreme Court and add
  judges that would support his legislation
• Instead, Federal Judges could choose to retire at
  age 70.

End of the New Deal

• By 1937, 7 Million were unemployed and the
  republicans had regained enough support to block
  more New Deal Legislation.
• At the same time Germany, Italy, and Japan were
  showing increasing aggression overseas
