What does it mean?
  • The verb tener means to have.
  • It may also refer to age.
  • Ex. Tengo catorce años.

Why is that conjugation weird?
  • What is different about that verb conjugation
    than how we have changed verbs in the past?

Tener is a stem-changer
  • Remember that the stem of a verb is the part
    before the ar, -er, or ir verb ending.
  • Ex. Caminar- the underlined portion is the stem!

Stem-changers
  • There are some verbs, like tener, that are
    stem-changers.
  • Tener belongs in the group that changes from e?
    ie.
  • A stem change NEVER occurs in the nosotros form!

  • Tengo catorce años.
  • You have a book.
  • Tienes un libro.
  • We have a game tonight.
  • Tenemos un partido esta noche.

Tener que
  • Tener que infinitive to have to (do
    something)
  • Remember- Infinitives are Spanish verbs that
    have the AR, -ER, -IR verb endings. In English
    the equivalent is to.
  • We use this phrase when we are discussing chores
    or something that needs to be done.

  • When we use Tener que, conjugate the verb to
    reflect who you are talking to/ what you are
    talking about.
  • Ex. Do you have to buy clothes?
  • Tienes que comprar la ropa?
  • I have to buy clothes.
  • Tengo que comprar la ropa.
