Where are The British Isles?

  • The British Isles are a group of islands lying
    off the north-west coast of Europe. The two
    largest islands are Great Britain and Ireland.
    Only a small portion of the Ireland, called
    Northern Ireland or Ulster, is part of the United
    Kingdom.
  • The most important of smaller islands are the
    Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea, the isle of Wight,
    in the English Channel, the Isles of Anglesey and
    the Channel Islands.

Seas
  • Seas are most important feature in Britain
    where no point of the territory is situated more
    than 120km from the coast.
  • The North Sea separates Great Britain from
    Norway.
  • The English Channel separates the main
    islands from the Continent.
  • The Irish Sea divides Britain from Ireland.

The landscape of Britain is quite varied it has
chains of mountains as well as high tablelands,
and hilly and flay areas, Starting from the
north, the relief includes
  • the North West Highlands
  • the Grampian Mountains (Ben Nevis 1.343m)
  • the Southern Uplands
  • the Cheviot Hills
  • the Cumbrian Mountains
  • the Pennine Chain
  • the Cambrian Mountains.

Lakes
  • British lakes are relatively small, but they
    are usually grouped together and situated in very
    picturesque locations.
  • The Lake District in the northwest of England,
    close to the border with Scotland.
  • In Scotland lakes are called lochs the most
    famous are Loch Ness and Loch Lomond.

Rivers
  • Rivers in Britain arent long and they are
    mostly navigable.
  • The Thames, Londons river, flows for about
    350km from it sources, north-west of Oxford, to
    its mouth, 103km east of London.

  • The Severn springs in the Cambrian mountains
    and flows into the Bristol Channel, its the
    longest river in Britain (540km).

  • The Humber, formed by the confluence of two
    rivers, which joins the North Sea at Hull.

  • The Mersey, which enters the Irish Sea at
    Liverpool.

  • The Clyde is in Scotland.

  • The Forth is in Scotland.

Climate
  • It is determined by the latitude and by the
    sea, and it is improved by the influence of the
    Gulf Stream, a current of warm water which
    originates in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Britains climate is a maritime climate,
    characterized by frequent winds and variability.
