5.1 Concept
  • Generated from oda tree in simplified and
    abstract form
  • Oda tree, a place to conduct meetings, make
important decisions, resolve conflicts and a
representation of dissemination of knowledge, is
used as a basic volumetric form.
  • The roof form is analogous with the deep foliage
of fully grown oda tree where as the windows and
the walls represent trunk and branches of the
    tree .

9
5.2 Concept transformation
Oda trees abstraction into a building volume The
color scheme will also be in line with this
concept, the roof which is a major building
element will be painted dark green color.

16
6.1 Concept Development
  • As a starting point, the Oromo popular theory on
the creation of the Sky and the Earth is used.
  • This theory is reflected in the internal
    partitioning of the traditional house

17
6.2 Concept Development
  • The number of units on the lower and upper blocks
is made to correspond with the number of years in
a single stage of Gadda system, that is , eight
    years
  • The house form is transformed into a curvilinear
shape while maintaining the principle of internal
    partitioning

18
6.3 Main Design Features
  • The building is composed of two curvilinear wings
and a rectangular block at the center.
  • The two curved wings define two external green
spaces, one in front and one at the back of the
    building.
  • Subdivision of each wing into eight is
    accentuated using four-story high walls.

19
  • Single loaded corridors lead to individual units,
allowing cross ventilation of each room. This is
essential since Nekemte is located in a
    geo-climatic zone defined as Humid-Plateau.
  • The entrance porch, the lobby and the Tea Lounge
are all provide with generous space of two storey
    height.

20
6.4 Programme requirements
  • 62 accommodation units each containing a toilet
    with shower.
  • A tea lounge with kitchen, store and toilet.
  • 4 Administration offices.
  • 4 multi-purpose rooms to be used for various
functions such as Multi-media room, meeting room,
    game room, etc.
