BACKGROUND
  • JAMES MERCER LANGSTON HUGHES (1902-1967)
  • Known as the Dean of Negro Writers
  • One of the most prolific enduring writers of
    the Harlem Renaissance
  • Published 16-books of poetry, 2-novels, 7-
    collections of short stories, 2- autobiographies,
    9-childrens books, 5-nonfiction books
  • World renown as a nationalist who sought to raise
    black consciousness through his writing
  • He says more in a few sentences than some PhD
    authorities have said in a small mountain of
    books. Historian John Henrik Clarke

BACKGROUND
  • HARLEM RENAISSANCE (c.1900-1935)
  • Known as the Black Renaissance and the "New
    Negro Movement", named after the 1925 anthology
    The New Negro edited by Alain L. Locke.
  • Grew as a result of the Great Migration of
    African Americans out of the south to northern
    cities such as DC, New York, Chicago, Cleveland,
    Detroit and St. Louis.
  • Revolutionized the genres of literature, drama,
    music, visual art, and dance.
  • Impacted countries worldwide, most notably
    Spain, Russia, France, Senegal, Liberia,
    Caribbean, England.

BACKGROUND
  • GREATER U STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT
  • The U Street corridor, known as Black Broadway,
    served as the entertainment district for the
    African American community from the early 1900s
    to the 1960s.
  • The Historic District extends from 16th St. on
    the west to 7th St. on the east and from S St. on
    the south to Florida Ave. on the north, and
    includes over 1500 historic buildings.
  • Named to The National Park Services National
    Register of Historic Places in 1998.
