Title: GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP

GRANTWRITING WORKSHOP

every grant, whether internal or external, begins
the same waywith a set of guidelines (and
deadlines)
In terms of planning, you must factor in the time
it takes Sponsored Research to process your
grant, if it is not an individual grant. Grants
that are individual are Artists Grants,
Fellowships and Residencies, Fulbright Travel
grants, etc. Grants that Sponsored Research
must vet are any grant projects that take place
at the University (as opposed to individual
artist fellowships to support a private art
studio).

There are a number of internal grants that
faculty may apply for from the CRC---Council on
Research and Creativity---but these arent the
same as external grants and you will need both
in your career. Examples of external grant
agencies are the NEA, the NEH, Florida Arts
agencies, public and private philanthropic
foundations.
5
  • PLANNING GRANT
  • It is the intention of this grant to fund
research not already supported by other means.
Therefore, faculty who already have a
    well-recognized, well-funded research program are
discouraged from submitting a proposal to this
    program
  • SRAD funds are invested to support this program
with the expectation that successful external
proposals will be generated within one year after
any award from this program to provide more SRAD
    funding to the university
  • MULTI-DISCIPLINARY GRANT
  • The PI may not have received a COFRS award in
the summers of 2005, 2006, or 2007. Only one
application from a PI may be submitted to this
    MDS program per competition round.
  • Hiatus There will be a 2-year hiatus period.
SRAD funds are invested to support this program
with the expectation that successful external
proposals will be generated within one year after
any award from this program to provide more SRAD
    funding to the university.
  • There will be an emphasis in the review for the
    eventual acquisition of external funding
  • COFRS
  • 3 YR HIATUS, capped at 13K, expectation of
    external funding within one year

Intent required and .
7
LETTER OF INTENT LOI Note the intent to
apply deadline. It requires a mandatory set of
names and addresses of potential reviewers. A PI
will not be able to submit an application if the
LOI deadline has not been met.
8
Due to ongoing updates, online guides trump the
printed versions of guides at most grant
agencies. The grant guides online are usually not
even updated until the agency is ready to receive
grants.

DSR Form 1 the Sponsored Research form that
allows a grant proposal to enter the system to be
processed for sending to the agency
11
DSR Form 1 the form also allows a Department
Chair and the academic Dean to be familiar with a
PIs projects and to allocate resources and give
official sanction to them.
12
When writing grants, use organizing devices, such
as simple Tables of Contents, to assist the
panelist who is scoring the proposal.
13
Narrative Sequence identify and explain the
subject for research (indicate importance)descri
be generally the state of current creative
activity / scholarshipthen focus on how the
proposed research / creative activity differs
from the current state ---or takes research /
creativity into new territory outline what
you, the PI principal investigator, have
already accomplished on the topic and / or give
background of the project describe what you
will do to bring the project to completion during
the grant periodexpenditures are always made in
the grant period state how the project or
production will be made available to the sector
of the public for which it is intended and its
likely impact

Sometimes honesty might not be the best policy
Id really like to have the summer to work in
my studio instead of teaching. Ive found it very
hard to get much done this academic year and I
need more than local shows. A grant for the
summer would allow me to get enough work done so
Id be able to try to find a regional venue for a
solo show in 08. And travel would mean a lot
to me right now. I could travel to gather
inspiration for a new series of paintings.
15
Same idea, professional approach, describes
goals In order to meet exhibition goals set for
the coming year, travel should occur during
Summer semester 08. By exploring regional venues
and making professional contacts then, my work
will be more widely shown. A second important
objective for Summer 08 is to amass a
photographic library of images. The
identification and archiving of new imagery will
be a vital resource for change in the next series
of paintings. .
Narrative is too much in the first person, weak,
tentative Id really like to have the summer
to work in my studio instead of teaching. Ive
found it very hard to get much done this academic
year and I need more than local shows. A grant
for the summer would allow me to get enough work
done so Id be able to try to find a regional
venue for a solo show in 08. And travel would
mean a lot to me right now. I could travel to
gather inspiration for a new series of
paintings.

The NEA used to be a staple of Arts Humanities.
Its budgets have been severely reduced, but PIs
should aspire to federal funding.
17
Back home in Florida, we have the Division of
Cultural Affairs programs.

Every grant requires a budget page.
Matching funds usually establish a one-to-one
(dollar-for-dollar) match. (Individual artist
grants, called Fellowships in Florida, would not
require matching funds.)
22
When cost-sharing (match) is required by an
agency, budgets generally follow the 3-column
budget page model 1) agency request, 2) FSU
project funds, 3) totals. Match budget example
to the right. ------------ If no match is
required, the budget page may simply indicate the
dollar request and no match is cited.
23
Budgets must indicate indirect costs when
required.
gtgt
Indirect costs are portions of the budget that go
to Sponsored Research as an overhead assessment
on the project.

Post-script to the Workshop Image TITANIC
MEMORIALGertrude Vanderbilt Whitney,
1875-1942Waterfront Park, 4th and P Streets,
SWWashington, DC1929 The Titanic Memorial is
dedicated to the men who died in the shipwreck
trying to save the lives of women and children.
In 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg
during her first voyage from England to New York
City. The ship sank in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious
ship ever built up to that time. Of the 2,200
passengers, 1,500 drowned due to lack of response
to distress signals and insufficient numbers of
lifeboats. Every year, people gather at this
sculpture on the anniversary of the Titanic's
sinking. Gertrude Whitney was born wealthy and
married a wealthy man. She was a great patron of
the arts throughout her life and she helped many
other artists show their work. She founded the
Whitney Museum in New York.
