Search for t ? ?? at BABAR

  • In standard model, extended to include n mixing
    and mass, BR(t ? ??) O(10 - 34)
  • But lepton number is violated in many extensions
    to the standard model
  • e.g.
  • Current 90CL limits on BR(t ? ??)
  • 1.1 x 10-6_at_90CL (CLEO on 13.8/fb, 1999)
  • 1x 10-6 _at_90CL(Belle, unpublished 21.3/fb, 2001)

  • Predictions reach as high as 10-6 even in light
  • of BR(? ?e?) lt1.2 x 10-11_at_90CL (MEGA 1999)

Summary
  • A search for the lepton number violating

events produced in BABAR results in
  • 13 events being observed with an expected
    background of 7.8?1.4 events.

SupplementaryComparisons with CLEO Belle
analyses
  • BABAR if 8 events had been observed, limit would
    have been BR(t ? ??)lt 9.5 x 10-7 with 56M
    t-pair
  • CLEO likelihood fit gives BR(t ? ??)lt 1.1 x 10-6
    and cross-checks with a cut-and-count approach,
    which gives BR(t ? ??)lt 1.8 x 10-6 ( 6 observed
    and 5.5?0.5 events expected) with 12.6M t-pair
  • BELLE (2001 prelim.) 1.0 x 10-6 (3 events
    observed, 5.9 ?0.6 events expected) with 19.3M
t-pair (if 6 events had been observed, limit
    would have been
  • 1.3 x 10-6)
