Font Families
  • A font family is a set of fonts that share basic
    characteristics.
  • Examples of font families

  • A font style is a variant of the family.

Types of Font Files
  • PostScript only for PostScript printers.
  • TrueType printer-independent outline font,
    supported by Mac and Windows.
  • OpenType
  • OpenType TrueType Improved version of TrueType
    with extra features.
  • OpenType Type 1 Improved version of PostScript
    with extra features.

Select Fonts and Sizes
  • Select the text and click the button on
    the Control palette to display the Character
    Formatting controls.
  • Then choose a different font and size from the
    drop-down lists.

  • Different font families have different styles

Italic vs. Skew
  • Skew is false italic.
  • Use when there is no Italic style available for
    the chosen font.

  • Horizontal scale makes text wider. It does not
    change space between letters.

  • Vertical scale makes text taller. Different from
    changing the font size because it does not change
    the width at all.

  • Tracking is spacing between character.
  • Does not affect width or height of the
    characters.
  • Tracking is based upon the widest part of the
    character.

  • Measured in thousandths of an em (width of
    capital M).
  • Default tracking is 0.

  • Kerning is the amount of overlap of character
    spacing based on the shapes of individual letters.

  • Set kerning to Metric kerning or Optical kerning
    to allow automatic kerning to take place
  • Metric using kerning information built into the
    font for certain letter pairs.
  • Optical kerning calculates the kerning to use
    based on the shapes of the letters.

  • Each frame has an In port and an Out port. When
    the frame is not linked to any other frame, both
    are blank.

    is overset. It is hidden and can be made visible
    by enlarging the frame.

    click the Out port to pick up the text thread

  • Two pages that face each other are a spread.
  • A spread consists of a left-handed page (verso)
    and a right-handed page (recto).

  • Change page numbering to start on page 2. To do
    this, open fly-out menu on the Pages palette and
    choose Numbering Section Options.
  • Insert a blank page at the beginning, and ignore
    it.

  • The Story Editor is a text editor window.
  • Does not show formatting.

  • Find/Change finds instances of a text string or
    of formatting, and optionally replaces it with
    other text or formatting.
