Title: Alternative solutions

Alternative solutions
  • Pb-Ag (0.02 0.03) is an interesting
    alternative
  • Pb-Ag is an alloy!! unlike Pb-Ca
  • Some properties
  • it is being used also in batteries with sulfuric
    acid
  • it hardens after schock-cooling
  • hardening process continues for weeks (like
    Pb-Ca)
  • it has been reported that it softens again, if
    stored for long times
  • (however, not quantitatively investigated)
  • much less corrosive than pure lead

Some mechanical properties in comparison breakin
g resistivity Pb (pure, 99.99) 17.5 N/mm2 at
max. 50 tear (elongation) Pb-Ag (0.02) 18.0
N/mm2 at max. 26 tear Pb-Ca (0.07) 30.0 N/mm2
at max. 50 tear Pb-Ag-Al (0.03,0.02) values
close to Pb-Ca (within 10 15)
  • Price
  • 200 /kg (Stirling Silver is priced at 6.24
    /oz. (1 oz. 28.xx g)
  • adds to 100.000 to the detector (but no
    need for cleaning cost-neutral)

conclude
  • should start tests
  • already brought 10 samples to Jp
  • further hardening possible by adding 0.02 Al to
Pb-Ag. Do we know what Al does to emulsions?
  • also brought Pb-Cu as another possibility
