2
Risk Screening Assessment Approach
  • Guidance Set out in the EPA Drinking Water
Regulations Guidance Booklet No. 4, January 2008
  • Semi-quantitative assessment giving a risk score
low, moderate or high, very high risk
  • Risk Screening Methodology
  • Catchment Risk Factors
  • Treatment Process, Operation and Management
    Factors
  • Population weighted factor 0.4 x log10 (pop.
    served by supply)

3
Risk Screening Assessment Approach
  • To be used by all Local Authorities to determine
the risk category of existing supplies.
  • High and Very High Risk - Action Programme to
reduce the risk and detailed assessment of key
    factors.
  • Monitoring / Sources protection measures and
    treatment / operation process upgrading.
  • Cryptosporidium risk should be assess and any
corrective action based on source of the risk,
    e.g. species specific risk.
  • To be affective requires a specialist input.

4
Risk Screening as a Scoping Tool for future WTP
and Supply Networks
  • Cryptosporidium has emerged as a significant risk
    to drinking water supplies.
  • Adapt the risk screening approach to form a basis
of early Cryptosporidium scoping assessment of
proposed new water treatment plants and upgrades
    to WTPs / supply networks.
  • The scope should include an assessment of
proposed Supply Network and upgrade of the
    network through to the Tap.
  • Provides a tool for decision-makers at an early
stage of the potential level risk associated with
a site location, the key catchment factors and
level of and type treatment that needs to be
    considered.
  • Focuses resources to the site specific risks from
    catchment, proposed treatment, operation and
management of Cryptosporidium from the start
  • Allows for changes in the site location, design
and treatment processes to meet site specific
    risks.
