Pregnancy

• OPNAVINST 6000.1B
• General policy Pregnancy and parenthood are
  compatible with a naval career.
• The DON will ensure health care needs of pregnant
  service members and will accommodate career and
  welfare needs to the greatest extent possible.

Pregnant Service Members

• Must notify command as soon as possible, NLT 2
  weeks after diagnosis
• Establish prenatal care plan
• Perform military duties within limits of
  condition
• Comply with all safety and health recommendations
• Entitled to 6 weeks of post-delivery convalescent
  leave

Pregnant Service Members

• May request separation but separation will not
  normally be granted
• Exempt from PFT until 6 months after birth
• Have work limitations particularly in third
  trimester
• Must be protected from specified environmental
  and occupational hazards
• May remain shipboard until 20th week provided
  OB/GYN care within 6 hours
• No transfers or TAD until 4 months after delivery

Single Parenting

• Policy contained in OPNAVINST 1740.4B
• Service Members must be ready to deploy
  throughout the world on short notice
• Must submit a NAVPERS 1740/6 Family Care Plan
  Certificate
• May be separated by reason of convenience to the
  Government
