2
Presentation Overview
  • Goal of the Project
  • Research and Statement of Need
  • Product Design Requirements
  • The Design Concept and Prototype
  • Product Evaluation
  • Conclusion

3
Project Goal
  • To design a recreational aide for seniors with a
    manufacturing cost of under 20

4
Research
  • Spoke to seniors regarding their
  • leisure activities
  • Interviewed Program
  • Coordinators from the Cherryhill
  • Healthy Aging Program
  • Gathered information regarding arthritis
  • and how it affects recreational activity
  • from the London Arthritis society

5
Statement of Need
  • Approximately 4 million Canadian adults suffer
from arthritis, many of them seniors
  • Arthritis in the joints of the hand is very
    common
  • It is difficult for these affected seniors to
    perform recreational activities requiring
    extended periods of gripping

6
Design Requirements
  • Our design needed to
  • Relieve stress on the joints in the hand
  • Be adaptable to a variety of objects
  • Be durable enough to withstand outdoor and indoor
    use
  • Remain within the cost constraint of a 20
    manufacturing cost

7
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • Main Features
  • Useful for a variety of objects
  • Transfers load from finger joints to palm of hand
    using the main strap
  • Main strap easily tightened using ratchet
  • Components
  • Base Glove
  • Main Strap
  • Ratchet
  • Contact Pad
  • Palm Liner

8
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • The Main Strap
  • Transfers gripping load from fingers to palm
  • Attachment point for gripping pad
  • Works in conjunction with the ratchet to make the
    gripping mechanism adjustable
  • Material Selected
  • Synthetic Leather

9
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • The Base Glove
  • Serves as the base of the design
  • Attachment point for all other components
  • Would ideally be manufactured in different sizes
and for both hands in order to scale our design
  • Material Selected
  • Trioxon

10
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • The Ratchet
  • Allows the main strap to be adjustable
  • The main strap can be tightened with one hand
  • Extra long handle minimizes the force required to
    operate ratchet
  • Material Selected
  • Plastic

11
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • The Contact Pad
  • Main contact point between the object and the
    main strap
  • Included to reduce wear
  • Material Selected
  • Synthetic Leather

12
The E-Z Grip Glove
  • The Palm Liner
  • Enhances grip of the base glove
  • Increases durability
  • Material Selected

13
Projected Manufacturing Cost
Component Name Material Cost () Labour Cost () Machining Cost ()
Base Glove 2.0 3.0 2.0
Main Strap 0.6 0.5 0.8
Ratchet 1.5 1.5 1.0
Contact Pad 0.3 0.5 0.5
Palm Liner 1.0 0.3 1.3

The Prototype
15
Prototype Video
16
Prototype Testing
  • Play tested the prototype at the UWO racquet
    courts
  • The prototype responded well to our tests

17
Prototype Evaluation and Recommendations
  • Illustrates the concept well The glove does add
    sufficient gripping support
  • Too much friction between main strap and finger
    webbing
  • Ratchet ladder is too stiff and long
  • Ratchet handle needs to be extended

18
Conclusion
  • The performance of our prototype confirms the
    validity of our design
  • Our projected manufacturing cost meets the
    required constraint
  • We now need to rework the design incorporating
what we learned from this prototyping phase.
