Terminology used in S.M.

• Independent variable
• The thing you changed, thing that is manipulated
  on purpose
• It is a variable whose value we know before
  starting an experiment
• When Graphing
• Goes on the X axis (horizontal)
• Should be on the left side of a data table

• Dependent variable
• Changes with the independent variable
• The variable we are trying to find out
• Variable whose value we dont know before testing
• When graphing
• Goes on the y-axis (vertical)
• Should be on the right side of a data table
• Ex. Does the drop height affect the bounce height
  of a superball?

Ex. Does the drop height affect the bounce
height of a superball? The superball does not
change during the experiment.
Ex. Does the drop height affect the bounce height
of a superball? We dont know the value of the
bounce height this is the dependent variable
