Motion. Purpose The purpose of this submission
is to request the WG to consider forming a new
Study Group to study the issues related with the
generation of a Millimeter-Wave Based High Data
Rate Alternative Physical Layer for Standard
802.15.3-2003 and provide the WG the results of
the study and possibly a new PAR. A motion is
also proffered for your consideration. Notice Th
is document has been prepared to assist the IEEE
802.15. It is offered as a basis for discussion

IEEE 802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal
Area Networks (WPANs)
  • Request to form a new 802.15 Study Group to
Develop a Millimeter-Wave-Based, Very High Data
    Rate Alt PHY for 802.15.3-2003

12
mmW IG Overview
  • IEEE 802.15 has formed a Millimeter-Wave Interest
Group to explore the use of the 60 GHz band for
wireless personal area networks (WPANs). This new
band, as defined in FCC 47 CFR 15.255, provides 5
GHz of bandwidth and avoids interference with
nearly all electronic devices. The high
attenuation of these wavelengths by walls and
floors allows more WPANs to occupy the same
    building.The IEEE 802.15 Millimeter-Wave
Interest Group (mmWIG) was formed in July 2003 as
an effort to assess the level of interest in the
    development of a millimeter-wave-based
alternative physical layer (PHY) for the IEEE
    high-rate WPAN Standard IEEE 802.15.3-2003.
