Why Youth Engagement is important
  • Government is a major provider of services for
    young people and ensuring feedback from service
    recipients is crucial.
  • Young people under 18 years of age do not have
    the opportunity to influence the formation of
    Government through voting.
  • Young people bring a unique and different
    perspective.

How do we engage with young people?
  • Our channels provide an opportunity for young
    people to
  • tell government what they think about issues
  • learn about participating in decision making
  • We use multiple channels to reach difficult
    groups of young people

What exactly are these channels?
  • The PROVOKE Network
  • young people 13 24 years old
  • open to all young people
  • currently over 1300 members across New Zealand.
  • Activate
  • youth advisory group for the Ministry.
  • 14 young people from the greater Wellington
    region aged between 15 and 22 years
  • meets monthly.
  • Online consultation
  • We are creating online methods of consulting with
    young people e.g. Schools Plus
  • Ministerial Forums
  • provide an opportunity for Ministers and young
    people to communicate
  • 6 held since 2007
  • Themes youth week /transport/education/diversity/
    youth councils/connecting young and old

  • The National Student Decision Makers Network
  • a network to support student trustees, student
    councillors or something similar within schools
  • there are currently 250 members.
  • The National Youth Council Network
  • established to provide a nationwide system of
    communication and support to youth councils
    across New Zealand.
  • there are currently 200 youth councillors signed
    up.
  • The National Youth Health Network
  • the network consists of young people currently
    health related roles, predominantly between the
    ages 12 to 24 years.
  • there are currently 60 young people signed up.
