  • when individual student planning is fully
implemented as a major component of comprehensive
    guidance and counseling programs, student
    success, including student academic achievement
is enhanced. Why? Because the processes of goal
setting and planning in individual student
planning provide students with purpose and
    directions. (Gysbers, 2009)

What do we need?
  • Building our ANCHORAGE
  • Systemic restructuring
  • Stepping up support to career guidance in schools
    for improvement of services
  • Exploring a localized and practical model of
    career counselling profession

9
Where is our ANCHORAGE?
  • Career education and guidance is a means of
empowerment for students to make informed and
    responsible choices on their learning,
occupations, career goals and other aspects of
    life.
  • Career education and guidance encourages students
to make careers decisions in accordance to their
    interests, abilities and personal orientations
  • Career education and guidance promotes career
development of students which better prepares
    them for actualizing individuals potential
through pursuit of their personal/career goals.

10
Where is our ANCHORAGE?
  • Career education and guidance assists students to
manage and adapt to the transitions from school
to work, and in the long run prepares them for
    life-long learning.
  • Career education and guidance should align with
developmental needs of students at different
stages of growth, thus differential provision in
    service should be considered.
  • Given the above beliefs and understanding, career
education and guidance, even in secondary school
context, should be provided for ALL students,
irrespective of their abilities and orientations
    age and level of study

19
Hollands Typology ? The Honeycomb Party
20
Training workshops for Finding Your Colours of
Life
  • 11 workshops were run with the collaboration of
    HKACMGM and CDI, LWLL Section
  • Workshops were well-received
  • A total no. of 500 plus educators received
training regarding the principles of career
planning and practicalities in the use of the
    learning tool

21
Publication of Finding Your Colours of Life
  • 90,000 Chinese and English ISP learning tools
    were printed
  • 4,000 Teachers Handbooks were printed
  • Teachers trained in the workshops were eligible
to obtain copies of learning tools for S.3
    students
  • Till March 2009, around over 60,000 copies of
student learning tools had been distributed to
    over 200 secondary schools

22
Insights and feedback from the pilot study and
evaluation study
23
Evaluation of Finding Your Colours of Life
  • Students perceived the learning tool helpful in
    promoting their self-understanding and facilitate
    exploration of their study choices
  • In general, teachers appraised the ISP learning
    tool more positively than students
  • For S.3 (Grade 8) students, formulating and
acting out the individualized action plan is an
    exceptionally challenging task

24
Evaluation of Finding Your Colours of Life
  • The result showed that conduction of the learning
tool in class-based sessions or form-bases
sessions does not differ significantly in
    effectiveness (vs. SISP results)
  • The two methods might not have much difference in
    fostering students participation and interaction
  • Further investigations have to be done to look
into contributing factors in form, class or small
    group sessions

25
Evaluation of Finding Your Colours of Life
  • The finding reveals that boys treasure
opportunities of career development activities as
    much as girls do
  • Girls responded more positively than boys towards
the career inclination assessment game, the
    Honeycomb Party
  • Boys outweighed girls in perception towards
usefulness of setting their action plans
  • Boys may be more action-oriented than girls in
actualization of their plans, if they are given
    the chance to make ones

26
Key facilitating factor identified
  • ? Enthusiasm, and
  • ? Professional knowledge of teachers
