Pangaea

• The earth used to be just one big continent
  surrounded by water.
• Over millions of years, they slowly separated and
  formed the continents of today.

Plate Tectonics

• The earth is made up of many plates that move or
  float over the mantle.
• There are different ways each plate moves.
• One way is called a Strike-Slip Fault.

Strike-Slip Fault

• When plates slide against each other and build up
  pressure.
• When the pressure gets too high the plates slip
  past one another and cause an earthquake.

Elements of an earthquake

• Fault
• Epicenter
• Magnitude

Richter Scale

• This is what we use record how strong and
  earthquake is.
• This machine records the intensity by drawing a
  line back and forth.

Mercalli Scale

• This is how we describe what damage an earthquake
  causes.
• This scale is different from Richter.
