• In the nineteen 20s the role of women changed in
  every way including the jobs they had, the
  clothes they wore, the places they went, the
  things they bought and the accomplishments they
  made.

A Spark of Women's Independence

• World war I created 23000 jobs for women and
  opened new doors and opportunities.
• Women's success increased their motivation to be
  treated as equals by demanding better wages and
  rallying for political rights.

A New Independence

• During the 1920s womens interests shifted from
  politics to social life and appearance.
• Consumerism and advertising led to this shift.
• Advertisements told women to be sophisticated,
  have a nice home, and also have of life for
  themselves.

Womens Fashion 1920s

• Young women of the twenties embraced a change in
  fashion trends
• Shorter dresses, short hair covered with tight
  caps, and make-up all were changes in 1920s
  fashion
• Women who dressed like this were called Flappers

Liberation

• Women of the 1920s could go out to bars, drink,
  smoke, and have lives other than being a house
  wife
• Birth control became less taboo which led to
  women being able to express their sexuality
