- Formatting arranging the shape, size, type, and
general makeup of a document - To format text
- Use the format command from the menu bar
- Use the buttons on the formatting toolbar (figure
4-1 page 61)

- You can apply a new font by
- Selecting it in the font dialog box by opening
the format menu and choosing font - Using the font box on the formatting toolbar
- The font box shows the current font
- Click the arrow to see other available fonts
- Click the font you want

- Scroll to your choice and click it
- To change the font of text ALREADY keyed, select
the text and choose font - To change font of text NOT YET keyed, choose font

- To remove a style from the selected text, click
the style button on the toolbar one more time - Toggling is clicking a toolbar button to turn a
feature on or off - Fonts can also be applied from the font style
list box in the font dialog box

- Changing Font Size
- Font size is determined by measuring the height
of characters in units called points. - There are 72 points in an inch
- Standard font size is 12 points
- The higher the point size the larger the
characters - You can change font size by using the font size
box on the formatting toolbar or the font dialog
box

- To change the color
- Select the text
- Click the arrow on the font color button on the
formatting toolbar or in the font dialog box - Choose the color you want

- To change an underline style
- Click the arrow in the font dialog box next to
the underline style box - To change an underline color
- Click the arrow next to the underline color box
and select a color

- Font effects enhance your text
- Effects are shown in figure 4-2 on page 67
- To apply an effect, choose effects in the font
dialog box and choose effect

- To highlight text or graphics
- Select the text or item
- Click the arrow next to the highlight button on
the formatting toolbar - Choose the color you want
13Copying Format and Style
- You will often format a paragraph with indents,
tabs, or other styles and find that you need the
same format in other part of your document - The format painter button on the toolbar allows
you to copy the format and style of a block of
text rather than the text itself

- Select the formatted text you want to copy
- Click the format painter command
- Select the text you want to format
- The text changes to the copied format

- A style is a predefined set of formatting options
that have been named and saved - By applying styles, you can format text in one
step instead of several and be certain all text
looks the same

- Select text
- Choose an existing style from the style box on
the formatting toolbar - You can also click the styles and formatting
button - The style and formatting task pane gives a
preview of each style

- Select text to be cleared
- Click the arrow on the style box on the
formatting toolbar - Click clear formatting on the submenu

- Controls the amount of space between each letter
- To change
- Open the format menu and choose font
- Click character spacing tab in the font dialog box
