Curriculum
  • Our school aims are
  • Belong, Be happy and feel safe and Be the best
    that you can be.
  • With this at the heart, through our curriculum we
aim to make learning fun, meaningful and use a
    variety of approaches.
  • To support this parents will receive a
    half-termly curriculum newsletter, outlining
areas of learning, extra activities that could
extend this and any extra requirements
  • eg. Jam jars for growing seeds or wellies in
    school on a particular date.

5
  • To link learning and allow children to apply
skills across the subjects we use curriculum
    mapping. (see handout)
  • Some subjects are linked so that children learn
    from a topic based approach.
  • This allows them to apply skills in other areas,
eg. Finding out about other countries in
    geography, art, literacy, ICT etc.
  • We want children to understand the relevance of
their learning in all areas and to understand
    that skills are transferable.
  • We feel that this will support them as life-long
learners as it will make learning more fun and
    realistic.

6
Involving Parents
  • During the year we will be introducing Shine
Days. These are days where parents have the
opportunity to come into school and work with
their own child and others in the classroom.
  • On the school website www.allsaints-leek.staffs.sc
    h.uk
  • There is now a parent zone, here parents will
find the link to the school online calendar,
    curriculum support class timetables, curriculum
    maps, key stage newsletters, calculation
    strategies for maths

7
Cursive script
  • In year 1 the cursive handwriting script is
introduced. This builds on the letter formation
    practised during the Reception year.
  • Benefits are that children rarely reverse
letters, capital letters are not mixed in words,
writing is quicker and joining used earlier.
  • In cursive writing, every letter begins and ends
on the line. Writing is more consistent in size
    and presentation is improved.
  • Every class will have handwriting time during
morning registration, where children will trace
patterns, form letters or words to build on their
own handwriting style and improve this.

8
Intervention Programmes
  • These provide extra support for children who are
identified as making slower progress and are just
below the level of national expectation.
  • ELS this is for Y1 children, with the focus on
literacy skills. It is a 12 week programme of 20
minute sessions (one per day). This is in
addition to literacy lessons and guided reading.
Short homework tasks are given to promote
    understanding further.
  • If your child has been identified for the
programme you will be informed at the beginning
of the Spring or Summer term.
  • ALK additional literacy kit. This is for Y2
pupils who need to consolidate letter sounds,
spelling, rhyming etc. It runs throughout the
year, children have 10-15 minute sessions (2-3
    times per week)
  • They work 11 or 21 with a trained teaching
assistant. Again, prior to your child being
included in the programme you will be informed.
  • BRP (better reading programme) one child who
requires intensive support for 15 minutes on a
    daily basis.
  • Talking partners 1 or 2 children.

9
Targets
  • Targets are set so that children are aware of
their progress and what they need to improve.
Each child has a literacy, maths and personal
    target each term.
  • Targets are set based on skills ladders, we
assess where children are and then what they need
to improve. The children are involved in this
    process.
  • Targets are set at half term periods. So, as
children enter their new class they will have a
target set by their previous teacher. This will
continue to be their learning target for that
half term. Then after the half term break new
    targets will be set.
  • Targets will be sent home when new ones are
issued and will be discussed at Parent
    Consultations.

10
Standard Attainment Targets(SATS)
  • SATS are statutory in Year 2 to measure the
progress of pupils as they come to the end of Key
    Stage 1
  • These assessments are in addition to levelled
assessments made each half term by teachers. They
comprise of tests and tasks, but are low key
children will be tested at different times to
each other and do not need to do extra work to
revise. SATS are not formal exams.
  • Changes to the SATS process means that they can
be administered at any time from January onwards.
Children are assessed in reading, writing,
spelling, speaking and listening, maths and
    science.
  • At the end of the year we report childrens
levels to the LA, levels are based on teacher
assessments, using SATS and ongoing assessment of
    learning.

11
Homework
  • Reading three times a week , children achieve a
    star.
  • Sight words/Phonics Children have words to learn
to read/spell each week. These are taken from the
high frequency NLS words or from phase
appropriate phonic spelling patterns. More able
children will be extended using spelling patterns
    from subsequent year groups.
  • Super Speller as an incentive for children to
learn and apply spelling patterns when children
get all spelling words correct they are entered
into the super speller box. A name from the box
is drawn at the end of the half term and a prize
    won.
  • Weekend homework children will receive homework
each week, this will mainly be maths based,
consolidation of learning in class or preparation
for new learning. At times other homework will be
given instead, eg. Science work or story writing,
    topic research/reporting etc

Thank-you
  • Any questions?
  • Please remember that we operate an open door
    policy.
  • We are available to speak to parents at the end
of each day when we dismiss the children, should
parents want a lengthier meeting at any time,
