• First system model created for an IS project
• Represents the scope of the system be describing
• Data flows into the system
• Data/Information flows out of the system
• External entities with which the IS will interact

Symbol that represents external entities people,
organizations, other systems that supply data to
or receive information from the system
External Entity
The System
The system to be built.
Label
Information flow to or from the system. Each
flow must be labeled. If multiple flows between
the system and external entities, multiple flows
must be created. Information flows only.

New Banner Function

• St FX thinking about implementing a new function,
  Booksmart, that works with Banner (but not part
  of Banner) to allow students to purchase books
  when registering for courses
• Student selects course/section in Banner. Banner
  records the text(s) associated with the
  course/section.
• Student given the option after registering, to
  purchase book.
• If student selects option, Banner passes required
  texts to the Booksmart.
• Student chooses text(s) he/she wishes to order
• For each book ordered, Booksmart checks STFX
  Bookstore inventory system for availability.
• For each book ordered, STFX bookstore advises of
  availability.
• Students must pay by credit card. After all
  books ordered, student supplies credit card
  information to Booksmart.
• Booksmart passes information to credit card
  processing company for approval. Credit card
  company passes approval back to Booksmart
• Booksmart generates a receipt which is mailed to
  students home address
