6Background
- BME Graduate Program founded 1968 in the School
of Medicine at UNC - BME Graduate Minor founded 1992 in the College of
Engineering at NCSU - Joint BME Graduate Program founded 2003
7Why a Joint Program?
- UNC gains closer ties with College of Engineering
- NCSU gains closer ties with School of Medicine
- Combined facilities and expertise enhance
opportunities for students - Serve as focal point for interinstitutional
research
8Distinguishing Factors
- Each student has a home university for purposes
of records and funding - Students have full privileges at both
universities - Common curriculum and qualifier exam procedure
9Current Status
- 23 core faculty, 13 staff, 113 graduate students
- 287 applications for Fall 2006
- 14 offered admission

15About Those Course Numbers
Research credits, pass/fail, thesis/dissertation
, seminar courses
16Advising
- Every graduate student has an academic advisor
who is a core faculty member. - Responsible for monitoring the students progress
- If research supervisor is core BME that is your
advisor - If not, a core BME faculty must be chosen to be
academic advisor. - You have the option to change advisors at any
time.
17The Program Summaries(The Checklists)
- The summary of (almost) everything is available
on the website - Go to

- Click on either
- M.S. program summary
- Ph.D. program summary
18Required Courses
- BMME 400 (Intro to BME)
- Research experience (1 credit of supervised
research taken in first three semesters) - Thesis or dissertation hours
19Core Topics
- Everyone must take core topics courses
- Life Science Core Topics (8 credits, 2-3 courses)
- Engineering Core Topics (9 credits, 3 courses)
- MS students must pass these courses.
- PhD students must complete the core topics
requirement with no grades below P/B and three
grades of H/A in the five principal courses. - Two years are given to complete this.
20Core Topics
- Life Sciences Core (8 hours)
- Either systems physiology (BMME 589 BMME 790,
PHY 503 504) - Or cell and molecular biology (BMME 570 770)
- Or a combination of the above
- Or other approved life science courses
21Core Topics
- Engineering Core (9 hours)
- Take one course in each of three topic areas from
the list - Courses transferred in may apply
- A more advanced course can apply if it uses a
course on the list as a prerequisite - Courses not on the list may apply, subject to
DGS/DGP approval
22Engineering Core Topics
Blue indicates UNC courses Red indicates NCSU
courses
23Math and Statistics
- Mathematics
- MATH 528 128 , 529 129 or MAT 501,502 or
other graduate-level math - Six hours required but advisors can exempt
students - Statistics
- Preferred BIOS 550 150 or ST 515
- BIOS 600 110 or ST 511
- Or other graduate-level statistics
- Three hours required, but advisors can exempt
students
Exemptions only relieve the required course,
not the credit hours
24Approved Electives
- Other courses to fill out the total credit hours
requirement - UNC Any course 400
- NCSU Any course 500 (or up to ten hours non-BME
400-level may apply for M.S. degree) - Ph.D.-level courses (graded courses 700-800 200
or 700 level) - M.S. One three-credit course or equivalent
