Title: Solubility

1
Solubility
  • The ability of a substance to be dissolved in a
    solvent

2
Making solutions
  • Unsaturated a solution that can have more solute
dissolved in it at a given temperature.
  • Saturated a solution that can no longer dissolve
anymore solute at a given temperature.
  • Supersaturated a solution that contains more
solute dissolved at a given temperature than can
normally be dissolved a single piece of the
solute or agitation is enough to make the
    solution solidify

3
How does heat affect solubility?
  • Think about a glass of iced tea.
  • How can you make your iced tea have more sugar in
    it?
  • What can you do?
  • Is this solubility? Why?

4
Solubility in Chemistry
  • Solubility can be described by a graph
  • Compares number of grams of solute in100 grams of
    water to temperature, C.
  • Each line represents the maximum amount of that
solute that can be dissolved at different
    temperatures.
  • Therefore each line can be considered a
    saturation line.

5
Reading the graph
  • Look for the solute your are using, and use the
axis to predict either the temperature or the
    amount for a saturated solution.
  • Ex What amount of KNO3 is needed to make a
    saturated solution at 50 C?
