Outline
  • Introduction
  • DMOC Introduction/Description
  • Desert Pivot Network Description
  • Problem Definition
  • Bandwidth Reduction Techniques
  • Network Rules
  • DIS Filter Analyzer
  • DMOC Software Router

3
DMOC
  • Distributed Mission Operations Center
  • Formerly Theater Aerospace Command and Control
    Simulation Facility
  • Air Forces Distributed Center of Excellence
  • Conducts and participates in several distributed
    exercises each year
  • Desert Pivots, Blue Flags, Roving Sands, JEFX,
    Millennium Challenge, etc.
  • Virtual and Constructive simulators

4
Desert Pivot Network Description
  • Data Links
  • T-1 1.5 Mbits/sec bandwidth
  • Gaurdnet, 750 Kbits/sec
  • DREN ATM Cloud
  • DMOC Network
  • Air WAN
  • Ground LAN
  • DFA is between Ground and Air LANs
  • Desert Pivot Scenario Size
  • About 400 600 Air Entities
  • About 3,000 7,000 Ground Entities
  • Data Protocols
  • DIS, SAR, NATO EX, TADIL J, TIBS.
  • The Need for Bandwidth Reduction is apparent!

5
Desert Pivot Network Description
6
Bandwidth Reduction Techniques
  • Simple Bandwidth Rules
  • DIS Filter Analyzer (DFA)
  • DMOC Software Router (DSR)

7
Bandwidth Rules
  • Only exercise data (DIS/NATO-EX/etc.) during the
    exercise
  • No File Transfers during exercise
  • Maximize bandwidth by adjusting DIS Protocol Data
    Unit (PDU) update rates
  • No remote terminal activity on the exercise
    networks
  • Simulation Management PDUs transmitted on local
    LANs
  • Tactical data transmission on STU IIIs

8
DIS Filter Analyzer (DFA)
  • DFA Description
  • Linux platform
  • Software application reads DIS PDUs and
determines if PDU passes or fails filter criteria
    set by the user.
  • DFA receives DIS traffic from two separate DIS
    LANs
  • Filter criteria are applied to PDUs as they are
    read

9
DFA Capabilities
  • Filtering Capabilities
  • Exercise Identification (ID)
  • PDU Type enabled filter (Entity State Fire
    Detonation Signal Start/Stop etc.)
  • Allow/Deny by Site/App/Entity
  • Allow/Deny by DIS Enumeration
  • Interactions (Fire/Detonation/etc. PDU) from
    denied enumeration are also denied

11
DFA Capabilities (Cont)
  • Range filter
  • Spherical range filters
  • Allow Entity State PDUs within a range of a
selected Site/App/Entity ID, or a specific
    latitude/longitude/altitude location
  • Control amount of high fidelity data allowed onto
    a LAN

DFA Applications
  • Filters DIS Data configuration set by user
  • Regions
  • Range filters are set to radar ranges of the
    simulators
  • Simulator Data Processing Limit
  • Limit amount of DIS processing for simulators
  • Analyzes DIS Data
  • Displays DIS PDUs (text format) and source
  • Can detect and filter bad data sent from a site
    or simulator

15
Software Router Overview
  • DMOC Software Router (DSR) is a transport utility
    (not related to OSI)
  • Minimal impact on existing sites and systems
  • Fixed bandwidth limitation
  • Non-uniform bandwidth load
  • Support for all UDP-based broadcast data
  • DIS
  • NATO-EX
  • SAR images
  • Free text messages
  • Voice over IP

16
Software Router Overview
17
Software Router Implementation
  • GNU/Linux platform
  • Deployability
  • Remote operation
  • Low cost
  • Data metering and buffering
  • Maximum packets per second
  • Maximum bytes per second
  • Packet priority
  • Multicast ensures a single copy of data on a
    network

18
Software Router Details
  • Configuration
  • Local routes
  • Remote (bridging) route
  • FIFO size
  • Maximum bytes per second
  • Maximum packets per second
  • Debug level
  • Network utilization and health monitoring
