BACKGROUND
  • DOT Strategic Plan 2006-7 2007-8 gave impetus
    for development of policy
  • Consultants appointed to assist in developing
    policy
  • Task teams formed DOT internal National (all
    9 provincial transport depts)
  • Workshop to introduce policy process to key
    stakeholders held in June 2007
  • Strategic meetings with DOE took place and still
    ongoing
  • 1st 2nd Draft policy documents developed

CURRENT STATUS OF SCHOLAR TRANSPORT
  • The vast majority (76 or about 11.4 million) of
    scholars walk to school
  • Car travel and taxis are most frequently used
  • Door to door travel is 30 minutes or less
  • Public transport provides only 13 of all school
    trips
  • Usage of public transport for schooling purposes
    differs from province to province
  • Gauteng has the highest usage of public transport
    and Limpopo the lowest

    taxi and is expensive R200 per month
  • The cheapest mode is the train and consession
    ticket costs less than R100
