d Punctuation Marks
- This section covers three marks of punctuation
period, question mark, exclamation mark.
2The period . is used to show the end of a
sentence or used in an abbreviation.
- Use a period at the end of a sentence. He went to
the store. - If quotation marks are used, the period goes
inside the quotation marks.Mary said, "I went to
the store. - Use a period to mark the end of an indirect
question. The only question he asked was about
the way she learned to drive. - Use a period for a command, request, or
suggestion that sounds like a question. This
implies an action and not an answer.Would you
see who is at the door, please. -
3 Use a period for an elliptical expression that
standfor a statement or command .No. Of
course. No way. Shut the door.
- When you use the period to end a sentence,
- make sure you start the next sentence with
- capital letter.

- Use a period after an abbreviation.

4The question mark ? Use a question mark when
there is a question.
- The question mark shows the end of the sentence
- when there is a direct question.
- Where did you go?
- If quotation marks are used, the question mark
- goes inside the quotation marks.
- Mary asked, "Where did John go?"
- If the question is not part of the quote, then
the - question mark goes outside of the quotation
marks. - Did the professor say, "No test on Friday?" The
- question here is not about the test, but what did
the - professor say.
5 If the accuracy of the information is in doubt,
put the question mark in parentheses ( ). He had
four (?) dogs in the car with him. The dogs may
have been running around and it would be hard for
him to count them.
- If the sentence is written like a statement, but
it - sounds like a question, use a question mark.
- With all of your money, you want me to pay for
lunch? - Use a question mark at the end of a word or
phrase - that means a question.
- John is coming for a visit today. Why?
6 The placement of the question mark is
determined by the location of the question within
the sentence.Set off the question by commasI
can see my dog, can't I, whenever I want?
- The question follows a comma or colon
- The question is, What are you going to do
- now?
- The question begins the sentence
- What are you going to do now? is the question.
-
7The exclamation mark !
- Use an exclamation mark after an expression that
shows strong emotion, a command, interjection, or
emphatic statement. - Don't you do that!
- If quotation marks are used, the exclamation mark
goes inside the quotation marks. - John yelled, "Don't do that!"
- If the exclamation is not part of the quote, then
the exclamation mark goes outside of the
quotation marks. I can't believe he had the
nerve to say, "That's not my fault!" The
exclamation here is not what he said, but the
strong emotion of the person hearing what he
said.
