    problems. It includes-

  • Holistic approach
  • Psychological and social integration
  • Promotes patient independence
  • Non institutionalised ethos

Patient Environment
  • Aim to provide a safe environment where
  • Individuals-
  • Are free from abuse
  • Can gain self esteem
  • Promote safety of service users, their families
    and staff
  • Have relational security

Seclusion
  • When a patient is secluded
  • Reviewed by a doctor immediately
  • 2 hourly independent nurse reviews
  • 4 hourly doctors reviews
  • If more than 12 hours in seclusion must be
    reviewed by Multi Disciplinary Team

  • Mental Health Act 1983
  • Reasons for being sectioned-
  • Risk of harming themselves or others
  • Symptoms are of a nature it warrants detention
  • Alleviate or prevent further deterioration
  • Remanded to hospital by the courts

  • Admission for Assessment
  • Requires two medical recommendations
  • Duration is up to 28 days.
  • No provision for renewal or extension
  • If further treatment is needed detained under
    section 3

Section3
  • Admission for Treatment
  • Requires two medical recommendations
  • Duration is initially 6 months. This can be
    extended to another 6 months and then for a year
    at a time
  • Usually follows a section 2 unless patient is
    know to hospital, then can go straight on section
    3

Section 35
  • Remanded to Hospital by the Courts
  • Assessment and preparation of a report only
  • Evidence supplied to the court by 1 Doctor
  • Can be imposed by Crown or Magistrates Court
  • Duration 28 days. Extended 28 days at a time up
    to 12 weeks
  • Can not be discharged and have no rights of appeal

Section 37
  • Hospital orders made by the Courts
  • Courts can send people to hospital when the
    alternative sentence might have been prison
  • Evidence supplied to court by 2 Doctors
  • Duration is 6 months, it can be renewed for
    another 6 months and then anually
  • Can not be discharged and have no rights of appeal

Section 47
  • The home office can make a Transfer Direction
    which allows them to transfer a prisoner to
    hospital for treatment.
  • The home office must believe this in the interest
    of the public
  • The duration may be longer than their original
    sentence.
