Energy Flow and Trapping Processes in Luminescent
Materials

  • The study of electron transport processes is
    important to a
  • variety of fields in materials science,
    including the
  • development of solar cells, transparent
    conductors, and
  • luminescent materials.
  • Electron mobility in materials can be studied
    by
  • investigating the way luminescent
    impurities doped into a
  • solid capture electrons that are
    generated via high-energy
  • excitation.

Increasing Gd3 concentration in (Y,Gd)BO3Eu3
makes the slope of these plots approach zero.
This Indicates an increase in electron mobility
in the solid.
Using reciprocal plots based on current models,
we have produced quantitative evidence that the
addition of Gd3 to a host lattice increases the
electron mobility. Understanding the
relationship between structure, composition, and
electron mobility is critical to the development
of more efficient materials for opto-electronic
devices, such as dye-sensitized solar cells and
mercury free lighting.
