TOPIC
  • Introduction
  • What is LAN?
  • What is VLAN?
  • Scenario
  • Requirements
  • VLAN Basic
  • Type of VLAN
  • Benefits
  • Limitations
  • Examples of VLAN

3
INTRODUCTION
  • What is LAN?
  • LAN is the glue that binds all the components in
    the office together
  • It typically connects workstations, personal
computers, printers, servers, and other devices
  • What is VLAN?
  • A LAN that is configured on the basis of network
address or some other grouping criterion.
  • A group of devices on different physical LAN
segments which can communicate with each other as
if they were all on the same physical LAN.
  • A logical grouping of network nodes that act as
if they are connected to a single, shared-media
    network.
  • A group of PCs, servers and other network
resources that behave as if they were connected
    to a single, network segment.
  • A LAN CARVED INTO SMALLER LOGICAL LANs

4
INTRODUCTION
  • Scenario
  • You are IT administrator for a company that wants
to perform a complete reorganization from 10
departments to 40, all of which want to have
    their own LAN
  • Solutions
  • Using multiple LANs
  • Using VLAN
  • Requirements before deciding to implement VLAN
  • User-based
  • Role-based
  • Context-based

5
VLAN BASIC
  • Physical LAN connecting few VLANs

6
TYPE OF VLAN
  • Port-based VLAN
  • Each port of a switch is assigned to a particular
    VLAN
  • MAC address-based VLAN
  • VLAN membership is determined by the MAC address
    of each individual nodes
  • Protocol-based VLAN
  • Each packets protocol addressing is examined
individually by the switch to determine VLAN
    membership

7
BENEFITS
  • Flexible network segmentation
  • Simple management
  • Increased performance
  • Better use of server resources
  • Enhanced network security

8
LIMITATIONS
  • Broadcast limitations
  • Device limitations
  • Port constraints

9
EXAMPLES OF VLAN
  • Simple structure workstations and servers are
in the same VLAN, no routing between VLANs

10
EXAMPLES OF VLAN
11
EXAMPLES OF VLAN
  • Complex structure servers are groups in one
VLAN, while workstations are in other VLAN
