Report from 56th SPSC meeting - Opend Session
1. Status Report of AD1, ATHENA R. Landua (30
min discussion) - 2x104 pbars/shot trapped
cooled in pbar trap several shots stacked
without significant losses. - 150x106 positrons
accumulated/5 mn 25x106 stored in recombination
trap for several hours. - Antihydrogen detector
commissioned. - Many tanks to the AD team. 2.
Status Report of AD2, ATRAP "Cold Antihydrogen
Are We There?" G. Gabrielse (30 min discussion)
- Demonstration of first positron cooling of
pbars. - Succeeded in trapping pbars
positrons in same space. - "May have made
antihydrogen" - Plea for fast switching time
(not to lose pbars). - Thanks to the AD which
"works better". 3. Status Report of AD3,
ASACUSA R. Hayano (30 min discussion) -
1.5x106 pbars stored /shot - Extraction of
250-10eV pbars achieved on very last day of
2001. - Progress made in CPT tests with
pbar/He - 2001 even more sucessful than 2000. -
RFQD now routinely used. - Tanks to this "nice
machine to work with" (the AD).

Report from 56th SPSC meeting - Closed Session
(1/2)
1. Approval of the minutes of the 55th
meeting 2. Matters arising 3. Report on the
155th meeting of the Research Board - LHCC will
take care of test beam time. - 25 ns p run
shifted to 2003. - Budgetary problems. 4.
Status Report on the SPS - Shut-down work
Preparations for LHC (dipoles installed in TT2,
TT10) - Civil engineering work on SPS/TI2
junction, TI8 and CNGS 5. Status Report on the
PS - Shut-down work MNP23 replacement
exchange of PS Main Magnet 1 - No spare for
East Area quads (critical situation for HARP
DIRAC) 6. Status Report on the PS and SPS
experiment 7. Status of AD1 ATHENA (H.
Bialkowska) - Well defined rates of pbars
positrons, close to goals. - SPSC congratulates
the collaboration looks forward to the
detection of antihydrogen in 2002. 8. Status of
AD2, ATRAP (H. Bialkowska) - SPSC congratulates
the collaboration. - Collaboration asked to
present a written report on 2001 plans for 2002
at next SPSC.

Report from 56th SPSC meeting - Closed Session
(2/2)
9. NA45/CERES beam time request (U. Heinz) -
Request for running with low energy ions in 2002
not recommended for approval. 10. Scientific
activities at CERN in the next years (SPSC
Chairman) - Of the 5600 CERN users, 50 are non
-LHC and 30 Fixed target - All physics
programme should be debated. - COMPASS NA48,
NA49 NA60 DIRAC HARP AD Others -
Consequences of a one-year physics cut w.r.t 25
yearly cut ? stopping SPS only ? - CNGS
technical review in april What should be CERN's
participation to OPERA ? 11. SPS and PS
schedules (M.Hauschild) - 25 cut in beam time
in 2002 (30 savings in power consumption). -
users very cooperative, no major problem in beam
time scheduling. - 31 days still available in
T11. - Beam "scrubbing" in SPS (for electron
cloud studies), before physics starts. 12. A.O.B.
