6
Database Integrity
  • Index fragmentation is a major cause of
performance degradation in Microsoft SQL Server
    databases.
  • Problem was addressed in SP2
  • New enhanced version of the Database Statistics
    timer job.
  • Previously, the sole responsibility of the
Database Statistics job was to update query
    optimization statistics for content databases.
  • As of SP2, the job also rebuilds content database
indexes every time it runs. This automatic index
rebuild helps to stop fragmentation and maintain
    database performance.
  • The Database Statistics job uses the online index
rebuild feature of SQL Server 2005 and should run
without any impact on performance for content
databases of up to the recommended size limit of
    100 GB.

7
Read-Only Content Databases
  • While performing some maintenance tasks, you may
need to mark content databases as read-only.
  • On farms that are running SP2, the site
collection associated with a read-only content
database is set to be read-only automatically,
and the user interface is modified so that users
cannot perform tasks that require writing to the
    database.
  • Previously, the user interface was not modified,
and users received error messages when they
attempted to perform operations that wrote
    information to the content database.

8
Stsadm Enhancements
  • SP2 added 5 new commands for the Stsadm
    command-line tool.
  • Stsadm commands
  • ECM
  • stsadm -o variationsfixuptool
  • Site Management
  • stsadm -o enumallwebs
  • Administration
  • stsadm -o preupgradecheck
  • Search
  • stsadm -o setqueryprocessoroptions
  • stsadm -o listqueryprocessoroptions
  • More info http//tinyurl.com/stsadm

9
Microsoft Enterprise Content Management
  • Content Deployment and Site Variations
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 includes
several enhancements that improve the performance
and stability of the content deployment and site
    variations features.
  • In particular, Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2
adds a new operation to the Stsadm command-line
tool that enables a SharePoint administrator to
scan sites that use the variations feature for
    errors.
  • The operation reports on errors encountered and,
where possible, fixes the underlying issues.
  • For example, the operation can find and repair
missing peer relationships and corrupted entries
in the internal variations relationships list.
  • Handles the propagation of large volumes of
variations content in a more manageable way.

10
ECM Command
  • stsadm -o variationsfixuptool

11
Site Management Enhancements
  • stsadm -o enumallwebs
  • stsadm -o enumallwebs -databasename
    sharepoint_site_content_db
  • Displays the IDs and site map status for all site
collections and subsites in the content database
  • More info http//tinyurl.com/stsadm

12
Commands with new parameters
  • Stsadm o deletesite
  • -Force the -force parameter is new with SP2 and
allows you to delete orphaned site collections.
In order to run the command, you need the GUID
for the site collection. You can get this from
either running the enumallwebs command as
described above and looking for any site
    collections where InSiteMap"False".
  • Stsadm o deleteweb
  • -Force the -force parameter is new with SP2 and
allows you to delete orphaned webs in the same
way you can delete orphaned sites with deletesite
    -force as shown above.
  • Stsadm o backup
  • -Nositelock (site collection backup) specifies
that the site collection lock during a site
collection backup is not set to read-only.
  • -Force farm (catastrophic) backup ignores the
disk space check and proceeds with the backup.
  • Stsadm o osearch
  • -Reprovisionindex in a farm with multiple SSPs,
you can use to re-initialize the query servers
for one of the SSPs while the other SSP continues
    to serve the query request.

13
Microsoft Office Search Server
  • Improves the reliability and stability of WSS
crawl, of SharePoint crawl, of crawling through a
very large corpus, and of backup restore.
  • For example, the Query processor multiplier can
be used to tune the query performance for SSP
indexing content sources that have highly
    restrictive permissions and many duplicates.
  • Improves the accuracy of searches that involve
numbers. For example, there is additional support
for large numbers in which a comma is used to
separate every three digits (for example,
1,000,000), for numbers that are between 9 and 40
characters, and for numbers that are separated by
    spaces.

14
Microsoft Office Search Server, Cont
  • Introduces a new command to the Stsadm.exe tool
that lets a SharePoint administrator tune the
    Query processor multiplier parameter.
  • stsadm -o setqueryprocessoroptions
  • Sets the current values of the SharePoint Search
    query processor settings

15
Microsoft Office Search Server, Cont
  • stsadm -o listqueryprocessoroptions
  • Displays the current values of the SharePoint
    Search query processor settings
  • More info http//tinyurl.com/stsadm

16
Improved User Experience with Forms
Authentication (FBA)
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and Office
    SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 offer a substantially
    improved client integration experience for
    forms-based authentication users.
  • Previously, forms-based authentication provided a
poor experience when users attempted to use the
client integration features of Windows SharePoint
Services 3.0 or Office SharePoint Server 2007
the client application would repeatedly prompt
users for credentials whenever they executed a
command in a document. To avoid this,
administrators were advised to disable SharePoint
    client integration features in forms-based
    authentication environments.
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and Office
SharePoint Server 2007 SP2, together with the SP2
updates for Microsoft Office Client applications,
provide a much smoother user experience and make
client integration a viable option for
    forms-based authentication users.
  • Users of Microsoft Windows Vista must install
Vista SP2 to take advantage of the improved user
    experience.
  • Not with XP

17
Browser Support
  • Web browser support in SharePoint Products and
Technologies is divided into two levels.
  • Level 1 Web browsers provide an optimal user
experience for all SharePoint sites, through the
use of advanced Microsoft ActiveX control
    features.
  • Level 1 browser support is extended to include
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (already)
  • Level 2 Web browsers support all of the basic
features of SharePoint Products and Technologies,
including read and write functionality and site
    administration tasks.
  • Level 2 browser support is extended to include
  • Firefox 2
  • Firefox 3

Microsoft Office Forms Server
  • SP2 offers a range of improvements for users of
    InfoPath Forms Services.
  • Performance enhancements in SP2 reduce both the
memory requirements and the page load times for
    large browser-rendered forms.
  • SP2 also improves the browser rendering of
various controls, such as the Cannot be blank red
asterisk and the rich text field.
  • Improves reliability of Forms Server and of
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server by addressing
the previous behavior in which an upgrade of an
    administrator-approved form template triggers an
    IIS reset.
  • Improves the Digital Signature functionality for
    InfoPath Forms Services.

23
Microsoft Office Excel Services
  • SP2 includes a broad range of fixes and
    enhancements that improve the performance,
security, stability, and usability of Excel
    Services.
  • SP2 makes it easier to configure Excel Web Access
    Web Parts on new sites.
  • Several rendering, calculation, and security
    issues have been resolved.
  • Fixes Open Snapshot so that snapshots open more
reliably, even if there is no SharePoint root
    site.
  • Fixes display issues that cause calculations to
    appear incorrect in some cases.
  • Improves connections to cubes by using .odc files
    in non-English cases.
  • Improves the performance of programmatic
    scenarios.
  • Fixes conditional formatting in Mozilla Firefox
    browsers.

24
Conclusion
  • Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 and
Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2
    offer significant enhancements to the
performance, availability, and stability of your
    SharePoint environment.
  • Installing these service packs in your server
farm also brings greater interoperability, with
newly added support for broader range of Web
    browsers.
  • Finally, SP2 includes tools that you can use to
prepare your SharePoint environment for the next
major version of SharePoint Products and
    Technologies.
