• Found in prokaryotes, such as amoebas.
• Located either floating freely in the cytoplasm
  or can become membrane-bound.
• Carries mRNA into polypeptide chain (protein
  chain) and makes new proteins.
• Consists of a small (30s) and large (50s)
  subunits.
