• Use caution working around the rear end of
  the mare
• Know how to read the mares behavioral
  signals
• Have the mare appropriately restrained with
  a handler at the head of the mare
• Let the mare know you are approaching and
  will be working on her
• Avoid sudden / loud movements
• Whenever possible, avoid standing directly
  behind the mare try and stand off to one
  side
