Kahlo - Biography
  • Born July 7th 1907 in Coyoacán, outskirts of
    Mexico City. In the house called La Casa Azul.
  • Her father was Jewish and Hungarian, born in
    Germany.
  • Her mother was Catholic and of Spanish decent.
  • They married shortly after Guillermos first
    wifes death, when giving birth to their second
    child.
  • Got polio at age 6, disguised her thinner right
    leg by wearing long, colorful skirts.
  • Also suffered from a disease called spina bifida.
  • She participated in boxing.
  • Went to National Preparatory School in Mexico
    City

Fridas Accident Operations
  • On September 17th, 1925 Kahlo was in a bus that
    collided with a trolley car. Broke her spinal
    column, collarbone, ribs, pelvis, 11 fractures in
    right leg, right foot, and dislocated shoulder.
  • 30 subsequent operations, spent most of her life
    until her death at age 47.
  • She began painting soon after her accident while
    she was restrained to bed rest, with the belief
    that she may never walk again.

Rivera - Biography
  • Born December 8th, 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico.
  • Moved to Mexico City in 1892.
  • At 10 Rivera already knew he wanted to be an
    artist.
  • Began taking classes at the Academy of San Carlos
    in Mexico City.
  • He later enrolled in military college upon his
    fathers request.
  • Attended for two weeks, before attending San
    Carlos as a full time student.
  • Met the governor of Vera Cruz, Teodoro Dehesa,
    who offered him a scholarship to study in Europe.
  • Studied with Spanish teacher Chicharro for 2
    years.
  • 1913 to 1918 Rivera went to Paris and devoted
    himself to the cubist school of art.
  • Married to Angelina Belhoff for 12 years.
  • After studying frescoes in Italy, left his wife
    and returned to Mexico.

Rivera Kahlo
Although there was a 20 year age difference the
two married in 1929. They traveled to the US and
France together.They divorced and remarried. The
two were very passionate, but were also endured
several betrayals. Rivera had several affairs,
including one with Kahlos sister. Kahlo soon
after began to have affairs with both men and
women. Kahlos strife continued when she had a
miscarriage. They were communist sympathizers,
and housed Leon Trotsky. Thanks to Rivera,
Kahlos work became more well known. From Mexico
to New York. Rivera was much more public and
monumental, while Kahlos was more about personal
strife.

Rivera Kahlo - Art
  • Kahlo was asked to join the Surrealism movement
    by Andre Breton, but she refused. Saying nothing
    she painted was just dreams, they were her.
  • Rivera was out mastered by Kahlo, even though it
    was because of him that she became famous.
  • After returning to Mexico, his paintings and
    murals were all about the common people, and
    Hispanic culture.

Kahlo - Death
  • Died July 13th, 1954
  • Died of an overdose, which is unknown to be
    accidental or purposeful.
  • That year her leg had been amputated to the knee.
  • I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to
    return Frida
  • Her ashes are on display in an urn in La Casa
    Azul.
  • Rivera said it was the saddest day of his life,
    when he realized how much he loved and depended
    on Kahlo.

Rivera - Death
  • Died November 24th, 1957
  • Found out he had cancer soon after the death of
    his wife.
