Title: WorkKeys Writing Test

1
WorkKeys Writing Test
  • For The ParaPro Class

2
The WorkKeys Writing Assessment
  • The writing test measures the examinees skill at
    writing work-related messages.
  • It is administered in an audio format that
    contains all directions and messages.
  • Examinees must listen carefully to the prompt,
take notes, and write clear, correct,
business-like responses in the form of short
    messages.
  • Messages must contain all essential information
    contained in the prompt.

3
Examinees are asked to
  • Listen to audio messages
  • Take notes based on what they have heard
  • Write messages similar to those they might have
    to write in the workplace.

4
Examinees must carefully listen.
  • Each message is given twice.
  • After the second repetition, the message cannot
    be repeated.
  • Examinees take notes between repetitions on what
    they have heard.
  • They need to list notes on all essential
    information.
  • They have a brief, specific amount of time to
write out the message before the next message is
    given.

5
When taking notes ask yourself
  • Who is the intended audience? (Who is the message
    to?)
  • What are the essential facts?

6
The message itself should be
  • Clear
  • Concise
  • Correct
  • Conversational

7
Messages should
  • Be business-like in tone
  • Should never be rude

8
Keep in mind
  • Messages should be short and to the point.
  • Dont put in unnecessary information.
  • Make sure messages are clear, correct, and have
the complete information required for the message.

9
Messages should be correct.
  • Write in complete sentences.
  • Begin each sentence with a capital letter and end
    with correct end punctuation.
  • All sentences should make sense. (Sentences make
    a complete thought.)

10
Message Writing Tips
  • Messages should be written in the 3rd Person.
(Use the pronouns he, she, it, him, her, they,
    them.)
  • Do not use the pronoun I.
  • Write as though you are an employee who is
    receiving a message from a customer, co-worker,
    etc.

11
Additional Tips
  • Try to spell words correctly. (If you dont know
how to spell a particular word, try to think of
another word you can use that you do know how to
    spell.)
  • Keep the message short and to the point. (Dont
    volunteer unnecessary information.)
  • If you make a mistake, or want to change a word,
neatly cross through the word you want to change
    and make your correction.

12
Format of Test
  • You will have a space to take notes. (Nothing in
    the notes will be scored.)
  • You will have a space to write your message.
(Everything in the message space will be scored.)
  • Messages must be in ink.
  • Messages must be legible in order to be scored.

13
Messages will increase in complexity.
  • The messages increase in length as the assessment
    progresses.
  • Messages range from about six pieces of
information given by one speaker to about
seventeen pieces of information given by two
    speakers.
  • The time allotted to write the messages increases
from two minutes to six minutes as the assessment
    progresses.
