Effective Speaking
Being Succinct We all like to explain ourselves,
and think that people need to hear the whole
story to understand what we have to say. If we
are prepared to put the details and drama aside
we can generally articulate what we want to say
with greater impact. This is important to
consider because, in reality, most of us has a
short attention span when it comes to listening.
We drift off into our own thoughts if someone is
telling us things that dont interest us. Or
else we suffer from information overload and
simply cant continuously process things that
take too long to hear. Padding our sentences
with extra words dilutes the message and takes
away the power of what we are trying to
say. Being Specific It might sound like a
paradox, but as well as being succinct, you need
to be specific so that whoever youre talking to
understands exactly what you mean. Make sure
you give people all the relevant information to
really illustrate the point you are making. Not
being specific can sound to the listener like you
are being vague, avoiding an issue, or not
completely engaged with them Being specific
takes a little effort it required you to pay
close attention to what a person is saying and
make that extra effort to write down or mentally
note the key points so you can be accurate and
detailed in your feedback. Being specific builds
trust and intimacy. Being succinct AND specific
means including everything that is relevant, and
nothing irrelevant.
Effective Speaking
Being Generous Being generous means being real,
sharing your humanity, opening up about whats
important to you, showing your vulnerability,
and being prepared to talk about what is
important to someone else. Being generous
creates a safe space for the other person to be
real with you. Being generous includes sharing
things about yourself that will make the person
feel more comfortable with you, for example
sharing your learning journey. Being generous
is a way of showing you care about the other
person. It builds more of the trust and
intimacy between you. Being generous invites
them to take the conversation to a deeper level,
away from surface facts and concepts into
thoughts, feelings, emotions and learning. Being
generous means you are focused on speaking for
the other persons benefit rather than for yours
