What is a Podcast?
  • A Web-based audio (and now video) broadcast via
    an RSS feed
  • The word podcast is a play on the word broadcast
    combined with the word iPod
  • You do not have to have an iPod to listen to a
    podcast.
  • You can listen to podcasts on anything that plays
    MP3s

Step 1 Be a Subscriber
  • Radio ITS has links to Technology podcasts and
    podcasts for kidshttp//ww2.umflint.edu/RadioITS

Step 2 Prepare Your Material
  • In general, a good podcast meets the following
    criteria
  • Its topical and newsworthy
  • Its thought-provoking
  • Its informative
  • It contains a unique point of view
  • It has structure (beginning, middle and end)
  • It will be published consistently (on a daily,
    weekly or monthly basis)

Step 3 Set Up Your Recording Studio
  • You will need
  • Computer (PC or Mac) with Internet connection
  • Software (Audacity or GarageBand, and iTunes)
  • Microphone and Speakers or Headset
  • For a video podcast, you can use a webcam

Step 4 Make Your Masterpiece
  • Record
  • Complete script
  • An outline
  • Stream of consciousness" format
  • Edit
  • Add music intro and ending
  • Add sound effects
  • Cut dead air
  • Save
  • Save as MP3 file
  • Publish
  • Choose a host for your podcast

Creating your podcast today
  • Assign speaker numbers to group members and
    silently read your part of the script
  • Go to Radio ITS web site and choose a music file
    for your intro. Save it on the laptop in the My
    Music folder
  • Import your audio (music) file into Audacity
  • Record the script, avoiding dead air
  • Export your podcast as a MP3 to the My Music
    folder, naming it the same as the topic at the
    top of your script
  • Burn a CD with your podcast file for each speaker
