A proposal for Italy contribution to the AMS
Ground Segment
  • R. Battiston
  • CERN 28/5/01

2
  • The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the ISS
(AMS-02) is supported in Italy by the Italian
Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the
    Italian Space Agency (ASI)
  • ASI and INFN have agreed to collaborate to
contribute to the setting up of the AMS ground
segment following what will be agreed and
    planned by the AMS Collaboration

3
Italian participation to AMS
7 groups, 35 physicsts students, PhDs.

Proposed contribution of ASI to AMS-02 Data
Processing
Hardware 1) Data archiving O(100 Tb)
(ASDC) 2) Data access online (10 Tb) restricted
for AMS users (ASDC) 3) Support to AMS MC
production ( 100, 2 GHz PC)
(AMS) Software 4) Access to international data
base from other experiments (EGRET, Integral,
Swift, XMM, Chandra.) (ASDC) Personnel to
support 1) 2) and 4) at ASI ASDC and/or CERN
and 3) at AMS (INFN and/or CERN)

Additional support of Asi SDC for AMS-02
Online documentation, software and data files
databases, archived or available online to
the Collaboration Development of user defined
software tools, real-time information for ?
AMS or ? AMS Assistance and tutorial on use
of multi wavelength data base for AMS data
analysis AMS scientists can be hosted for
periods at ASDC to work on the data.

Proposed contribution of INFN to AMS-02 Data
Processing
  • Hardware
  • AMS Data Station at CERN
  • Participation to the AMS Science Center at CERN
  • GARR High Bandwidth Networking (CERNlt-gtItaly)
  • Software
  • 3) Operation of the MC PC farm(s) for MC Event
    Production
  • 4) Sub-detector calibration and monitoring

11
Requests to ASI and INFN will start this year
To ASI request within two months (FY 2001)
To INFN request by july 1999 (next FY jan.
to dec. 2002)
12
In order to proceed further with the requests we
need a final agreement on the documents which
describes the overall plan for the AMS ground
segment, including cost sharing.
