  • Started by six confederate veterans
  • Nathan Bedford-main leader of the group

How they first came about
  • Six confederate solders sat around a fire a were
    talking about ideas for a new society.
  • They decided that they were going to make a Klan
    and keep it a secret for amusement
  • KKK-circle which they were in around the fire
  • Wanted to show off so galloped their horses
    around town while wearing white sheets and
    pointed hats.
  • Caused a stir and that is how they decided to
    make the sheets a uniform.

How the KKK turned
  • People in other towns heard about this group and
    made their own, but with beliefs.
  • They started by making late night visits to black
    homes and telling them to behave or they would
    return.
  • Soon the threats turned into violence.
  • The violence was exerted on blacks who insisted
    on exercising their new rights of freedom.

New Beliefs for the KKK
  • White supremacy
  • A white supremacist organization which are
    dedicated to opposing civil rights for blacks,
    Jews, and other ethnic,religiouse and social
    groups.

At the beginning of hate
  • At the beginning the KKK was not concerned with
    other ethnicities and religions.They were just
    focused on blacks.
  • Concerns of other races and religions started in
    about 1887
  • This is when about 23 million people from Great
    Brittan, Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Russia
    started coming to America.

  • Racism was legal
  • Deep south greatest attempts to keep blacks
    socially, politically and economically powerless.
  • Lynching of blacks in white mobs started
  • Racism and violence caused major migration of
    black to northern cities.

A cruel act
  • Klan's would go to black homes at night and
    demand water the blacks would give it to them the
    would appear to be drinking it and keep
    demanding more.
  • Would be pouring it in a tube
  • Say that hadnt had a drink since he died on the
    battlefield at Shiloh
  • Leaving blacks in fear that ghosts of the
    confederate dead were ridding around.
