A dredge is dug from the bottom of the lake at
sites along a transect.

Dr. Zhu adds water to make a slurry out of the
muddy mixture.

The slurry is strained to collect the mussels.

Samples are bagged and brought back to the
laboratory for analysis. Students sort and count
the mussels to make population comparisons.
