cancer in women - Breast cancer is ranked as the second most common
cause of cancer death in women

chance of developing breast cancer in her
lifetime. - GRH has 2277 female employees.

- Province-wide breast screening program funded by
our provincial government - Program encourages family physician referral
- Patients can also self refer a huge benefit for
women in any area without a family physician - To qualify, you must be 50 years of age or older,
with no previous breast cancer and no breast
implants

- For every 100 women screened at OBSP,
- 11 are referred for further tests
- 1 in 11 women referred for further tests will
have breast cancer - 75 of breast cancers diagnosed at OBSP are lymph
node negative

regular breast screening!

15How does the program work?
- Any GRH employee over the age of 50 can call
extension 3932 to join the staff program - Any GRH employee who is a breast cancer survivor,
regardless of their age are included in the
program (must have referral from family
physician) - Any male GRH staff members can invite their wife
or significant other to participate - Upon completion of their initial screening
appointment, they are asked to fill out our staff
satisfaction survey - After handing in their survey they are given a
gift certificate and the GRH breast cancer pin to
promote the staff program -

measured through a staff satisfaction survey

captured at their next screening appointment
within the first two years of our program launch - Every month, the Grand River Hospital OBSP
database is updated for staff eligibility as
staff members begin to meet the criteria

- The afternoon we launched our program, our
bookings staff took 38 calls from staff members
to book their appointments. - After two weeks, we had already booked our 100th
staff member! - and the phone is still ringing.

Newsletter, distributed to over 800 breast
centers across North America.

- Our OBSP cheerleaders were an energetic group
from medical imaging - This creative bunch designed an OBSP cheer to
perform at our launch complete with novelty bras
and pink accents to compliment their attire - They practiced for two weeks before our launch
and concluded they never had had so much fun on
the job

song (to the tune of YMCA) providing candid
commentary while the other four cheerleaders
performed the OBSP actions - complete with participation from the crowd!
